Secession from the Union was the main cause for the Civil War.
When Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861 many of the southern states were against him because they believed he was going to free the saves. In Lincoln's inaugural l speech he says he will not interfere with slaves who are in salves states, that he had no jurisdiction to do so. Secession from the union was a big problem when Lincoln was elected many states sent the papers to congress, so they would be able to leave the Union ,, but Lincoln did not allow for this to happen and that was when the confederacy was formed. This ties into our topic of national unity because this is what caused the Civil war the union wanted to bring the states back together to be one country and not separate.
